Turn your smartphone into a fully featured GPS device using Viewranger software. Learn essential tips, tricks, settings and easy to follow guidance to get out and navigate with your device, share routes and tracks and make and use points of interest. Keep the device dry, safe and powered up during the day.
5/6 hour indoor course (apart from the odd foray to test things out) on the first day based at Sway village Hall. Full practical second day out in the forest putting things into practice walking a route planned on the device. Use the device in the wild to record tracks, use points of interest and other functions.
Suitable for anyone who wants to use Viewranger software on their device and turn it into a fully featured outdoor GPS. The course is as non-technical as possible so suitable for anyone with a willingness to learn new skills. Courses can also arranged on a small group basis and as one or two day course.
Bring your own device with Viewranger installed- Use free open source maps or buy a few map tiles to get going. Devices can be running Android or iOS - limited number of devices available to hire.
Course joining details are sent a few weeks before the course start date and include comprehensive details to get to the start locations and recommended clothing and equipment list. If you want additional kit advice then just ask.

Indoor tuition and outdoor learning
Most of the course is spent inside learning and gaining familiarity with your device with a couple of hours spent out in the New Forest navigating to points of interest, following a route, making a track and getting hands on with your device.

Tips and tricks to get the most from your device
The course is based around using a smartphone running Viewranger smartphone mapping software. Viewranger can be taught for both Android and iOS devices, smart phones and tablets!
New Forest Navigation will be able to supply a couple of smart phones/tablets for the course if you do not have your own. If you have your own smartphone then install view ranger and bring it along with any charging leads you are encouraged to bring them along with you as well. All equipment owned by you is used entirely at your own risk and its security and care is entirely your own responsibility.
Viewranger GPS and mapping course locations
This all day course is held at Sway Village Hall and out nearby in the New Forest. The village hall is short distance away from the railway station giving excellent public transport links to all parts of the south and south east.
The majority of the course is held indoors where you will get a chance to see a demonstration of, and try some of the software, plans a short walk and transfer information to and from your smartphone or GPS. The course will also involve a short walk using the smart phone or GPS to navigate a route and record a track and waypoints to demonstrate how to transfer information from the device.
Participants should therefore be able to walk a maximum of 3 or so miles on forest tracks, paths and at times muddy open forest.

You will be emailed detailed joining instructions for each course around 2 weeks before the course date.
If you are coming from further a field Sway is quite central and easily reached from Christchurch and Bournemouth to the south west, Salisbury and Wiltshire area to the north and from Hampshire, Surrey or London using the main road and rail network.
There is a train station in Sway with frequent trains from all parts of the south, south east.
Do allow enough time to travel across the forest and download or check directions before you come!

It is easily accessible from the surrounding counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Surrey, Sussex and London. No need to travel to Snowdnia or Peak District with the New Forest on your door step!
